His body throbbed with wanting her, he thought angrily, and he had just made love to her yet again. What is wrong with me? He rolled over to her and smoothed her hair away from her face, then stilled. "Where are your pearls, Alex?"

Her hand went to her bare neck. "I don't know. I had them on. ..." She sat up, searching the area around her. Then she spotted them at the bottom of the bed, a long, luminous rope, coiled and gleaming on the oyster-hued satin. "Oh, no!"

Damon reached for them. "The string has been broken. I'm sorry. I guess I got carried away. My lovemaking must have been too rough."

Her distress melted away. "I can't imagine you being too rough."

His stomach began to flutter with fresh hot need. "I'll get them restrung for you. They probably need it anyway after being hidden away for so many years." He laid the pearls on the bedside table, turned back, and brought her firm, warm, softly curved body against his. "I know a jeweler in Paris who will do an excellent job. Tomorrow, two of my best men will take them."

Just for a moment she felt a stirring of uneasiness. But when his hand slipped between her legs and his mouth covered hers, she forgot it.
